Paul Newman's 1969 film "Winning" did not have a great impact on his film career. It did, however, have a tremendous impact on his personal life, which became his passion and a second career. In order to portray a racecar driver for the movie, Newman attended a weeklong racing school. Over the years, he kept returning to the sport, spending the last 35 years of his life as a racing team owner and amateur driver. Newman is also well known for his philanthropic efforts. With his signature line of "Newman's Own" salad dressings, Newman has raised a staggering $570 million for charity since 1982. In 1988, Newman founded the SeriousFun Children's Network, a worldwide network of programs and camps for seriously ill children. Since then, 1.3 million children have been able to forget about their troubles for a while and, as Newman implored, "raise a little hell." Although Paul Newman passed away in 2008, his legacy lives on in good-hearted hell-raisers like Josef Newgarden (pictured, right). A Nashville native, Newgarden is a two-time Indycar Series Champion. He currently serves as the driver ambassador for Newman's SeriousFun Children's Network. In 2019, Newgarden led a charity ping-pong tournament in Nashville which raised $100,000 for SeriousFun. On August 5, in advance of the Music City Grand Prix, Newgarden revived the event, attracting racers, entertainers, and players from the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Not content to play the gracious host, Newgarden and doubles partner Hélio Castroneves (pictured, left) won the event. Newgarden craftily forced an error at championship point with a slow, deceptively spinny forehand. The big winners, of course, were the kids. Surpassing the previous mark, the tournament raised $136,000 for SeriousFun, enough money to raise more than a little hell. Josef Newgarden, charming and handsome like Paul Newman, could certainly follow Newman's career in reverse, going from the checkered flag to the silver screen. Throw in a passion for philanthropy and Newgarden truly has Newman's "Winning" combination.
