Will Bayley's life would have been quite different without the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). In all likelihood, he would not even be alive today without it. Bayley is the defending Paralympic gold medalist in men's Class 7 table tennis. His numerous other titles, including the 2014 World Championship, are testament to not only his skill and hard work, but to those of the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other health care professional at GOSH. Born with arthrogryposis, a rare disorder restricting the movement of all his limbs, Bayley faced a pitched battle since birth. Through surgery and intensive therapy at GOSH, Will learned to walk, although with great difficulty. As young Will grew to face life with his disability, he and his family were hit with even more frightening news. At age seven, will was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Again, GOSH stepped up, starting Will on a then-cutting edge chemotherapy with vincristine, which has since become the standard treatment for lymphoma. Not only did this treatment save his life, but it also played a pivotal role in determining its course. Bayley's chemotherapy was administered via a "Hickman line," an external tube for delivering the vincristine in slow, steady doses. Due to the Hickman line, Will was prohibited from playing contact sports. His quick-thinking grandmother then bought him a ping-pong table. Will took to it immediately, even besting his previously unassailable older brother. The rest, as they say, is history. Bayley began touring the world, racking up medals. For his athletic ambassadorship, he was recognized as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). In perhaps the greatest honor an athlete can receive, he was even invited to participate in the popular British dance competition program, "Strictly Come Dancing." Now, with the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bayley is doing his best to support both the well-being of his fellow citizens and the very hospital which made his amazing life possible. It is with these lofty goals in mind that he has launched a line of his signature rainbow face masks, with all proceed going to GOSH. "All my life I’ve felt indebted to Great Ormond Street and I always wanted to help out in anyway possible," writes Bayley. "I really hope with these fantastic facemasks we can all together raise loads of money for a charity very close to my heart that are in serious need!" To date, he has sold over 2,700 masks, raising over £10,000 for the children's hospital. For more information, click the link to Will Bayley's Instagram account below. Check it out, for GOSH's sake.
