"I haven't been everywhere yet," wrote Susan Sontag, "but it's on my list." For Sally Moyland, this absurdist quip could actually be an attainable goal. Born in Fremont, California, the 13-year-old Moyland has spent years training in Taiwan. This extremely high level of play has helped Moyland win multiple US national championships, including the 2017 Girls U10 title. Her international training has helped propel Moyland to a top-200 world ranking among cadet (i.e. under 15) girls. In October, Moyland proved she was among the best of her age group, even in Taiwan, by making the island nation's cadet team. Now, Moyland has set the bar even higher, aiming to fight her way on to Taiwan's national Under 19 team. Taiwan (known as Chinese Taipei, in certain circles) is one of the global superpowers of table tennis. The Taiwan women's team is ranked fifth in the world, and the men's seventh. To make Taiwan's national Under-19 team would be a Herculean feat, but that is exactly what she has done, claiming one of only 12 spots out of a field of 224 entrants. At 13, she is the squad's youngest member. "Overall, I feel I performed at a higher level than before, both physically and mentally," says Moyland. "With this result, I’ve managed to demonstrate a strong sporting demeanor, and achieve one of my goals as I work towards growing my skills so that I can represent the USA in international events." Sally Moyland still has "everywhere" on her itinerary. At the rate she is going, there is an excellent chance she will make it.
