Everyone knows the Scout motto (all together now): "Be prepared." Less familiar to the uninitiated, however, is the Scout slogan: "Do a good turn daily." For one New Jersey Scout, these guiding principles are a call to action. Justin Dougherty (pictured), a 16-year-old Boy Scout from Roxbury, New Jersey, has paid his dues helping little old ladies cross the street and has the merit badges to prove it. Now, he is setting his sights on building a more enduring legacy for his Eagle Scout Project. A student at Roxbury High School, Dougherty aims to install a regulation-size outdoor table on the school grounds, along with benches for spectators. "My project… will be creating a 'ping-pong coliseum,'" he says. "I believe that school sometimes gets a bad reputation for being strict and not fun," explains Dougherty. "So ping pong could be the thing to lighten things up at school and/or something for students to look forward to... so students start associating fun with school." While Dougherty's project sounds like a win/win for students and the school, it does come with a cost—$1,500, to be precise. A link to Justin's GoFundMe page can be found in the article below. "I have been a Roxbury resident my whole life and want to give back to the community," says the fledgling Eagle. "I love playing ping-pong, and I usually play with my brother. It is one of my favorite sports, and I want to spread the ping-pong love." When the table is installed and inevitably gains a coliseum-like audience for the battles waged across it, the Scout slogan may eventually acquire new meaning as the young players acquire new skills. "Do a good turn daily," then, could apply to the torso rotation necessary to execute a powerful forehand loop.
