If you like to entertain, the ITTF is now entertaining expressions of interest for hosting the 2023 World Championships. This momentous event will reflect the ITTF's renewed commitment to inclusiveness. For context, 107 nations participated 2019 World Championships in Budapest. While this is an impressive number, it represents only 47% of the ITTF's member nations. Starting with the 2021 World Championships in Houston, all of the ITTF's 226 member nations will be invited to participate in the regional stage of the championships. From there, players and teams will be systematically winnowed down through continental and intercontinental stages, culminating in the Houston final. This increased participation will signal a new era in global table tennis. Each subsequent World Championship will benefit from the increased exposure afforded by the expanded format. The host city will in turn benefit from increased revenue from ticket sales and TV revenue.
