People passing through San Francisco's BART plaza at 16th and Mission may notice some new sights, sounds and smiles. Thanks to a group of local artists led by social worker Galen Maloney, the bustling station is now home to an aluminum ping-pong table with paddles and balls available to the public. Maloney and his merry band of artists began installing tables in public parks in 2015, creating bustling scenes reminiscent of those around the public tables in Manhattan's Bryant Park. On the heels of these successes, he saw an opportunity to spread cheer to the Mission District. Said Maloney, “We’re trying to activate an area that hasn’t had a lot of love." In order to gain the blessing of BART officials, Maloney has cited such benefits as promoting public interaction and exercise, not to mention the mirth and merriment which inevitably ensue. “The more ping-pong,” said Maloney, “the merrier.” Truly a worthwhile Mission statement.
