This Independence Day weekend, much will be made of the revolutionary spirit in England's American colonies two and a half centuries ago. How many know, though, which town in the original 13 colonies was the first to petition the colonial government for independence from England? The answer, of course, is Malden, Massachusetts, located north of Boston. Interestingly, 20% of Malden's residents are Asian-American, compared to 6% of the United States' population. Serving this demographic is the Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition (GMAACC). This nonprofit community organization has grown especially relevant after the shameful spike in anti-Asian/Pacific Islander hate crimes nationwide. "Many in our community—including Asian American elders—have been eager to find recreational opportunities after a year of lockdown," says GMAACC program director Dr. Jenny Hsi. "With more people getting vaccinated and restrictions being lifted, we are excited to provide a safe and healthy way for folks to gather." Thus was born the new GMAACC Ping Pong Club. Located in Malden's First Parish Church, the club hosted the inaugural rally yesterday, July 1st. Local dignitaries on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Malden Mayor Mayor Gary Christenson, state Representative Steve Ultrino, and several members of the Malden City Council. Three tables will be available, Monday to Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. "This provides our elders with a healthy, communal activity as we move into the new normal of pandemic recovery," according to GMAACC co-founder Mai Du. This weekend you will surely witness requisite crass commercialism, reckless use of fireworks in the midst of a record heat wave and a nationwide display of gluttony which turns every red-blooded American's backyard barbecue into a tryout for Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. As you celebrate independence, don't forget Malden, the unassuming Massachusetts town which was fighting for freedom before it was cool, and carries on the struggle to this day.
