A new Bay Area table tennis club boasts talent of Olympic proportions. In one month, Kanak Jha, Lily Zhang, Nikhil Kumar and Xin Zhou will all be in Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics (observed). For now, however, they are honing their reflexes at the new 888 Table Tennis Center in Burlingame, California. Only US women's team members Wang Huijing and Liu Juan are missing from the complete US Olympic roster in the Bay Area. Like the Olympic Games themselves, Olympic preparations have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, four weeks from the first service and return in Tokyo, teams around the world are scrambling to make up for lost time. "There was, obviously, months at a time where people weren’t able to practice, so I think everyone's facing similar issues," said 18-year-old Bay Area native Nikhil Kumar. "But, I think in the end, I think we'll all be prepared for this tournament." Lily Zhang reflected on playing in the Olympics after missing a year and a half of international competition. "I think it will be a little bit difficult," she admitted. "Obviously there is a lot going on with COVID and regulations and all that stuff, but I’m just going to try to keep my head down and focus on what I need to focus on, which is trying to get a medal at the Olympics." Kanak Jha and Lily Zhang (pictured) are aided in their efforts by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Each was among the 17 young athletes from around the world to be named a "With The Future In Mind" scholarship winner, designed to support Olympic qualifiers in their training. Such focused preparation will also come in handy as both Zhang and Jha aim to defend their singles titles at the US Nationals, starting July 4. In the meantime, you will know where to find them.
