Timo Boll has a signature service. The 13-time German men's singles champion almost invariably employs the reverse pendulum forehand service. A lefty, Boll loves to bait right-handed opponents with a side-underspin serve to the forehand. It looks like it might bounce off the side, tempting a forehand loop, but by the second bounce the sidespin takes effect and causes the ball to curve into the would-be attacker's elbow. "I think my service is very good because I have a lot of variation," says Boll, matter-of-factly. "It's not just the spin, it's also the placement... It's much more difficult if you place the ball in different points, different lengths, different spins so the opponent cannot get used to it, and then he is not precise anymore... This is my strategy... and also one of my biggest strengths." Like all professionals, Boll has a variety of services which all look more or less the same to the untrained eye. His mastery of spin variation has been a boon to his club, Borussia Düsseldorf. Since signing with the club in 2007, Boll has led them to the all-time record in Bundesliga championships. Of course, winning isn't everything. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck earlier this year, Boll and his squad launched "Borussia Düsseldorf helps - Together through the crisis," a charitable campaign focused on helping those most in need. Services range from shopping, running errands, and providing transportation for seniors, families and others most affected by the lockdown measures. The German bank Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf was so impressed by the club's philanthropic efforts that they were inspired to pitch in themselves. Toward that noble end, CEO Karin-Brigitte Göbel presented Boll and Borussia Düsseldorf 2,500 euros to help carry on their mission. "I'm proud of my Borussia that they have been socially committed and responsible for many years," beamed Boll. "And especially in these times there are many people who need help. So it is all the better that the Stadtsparkasse is now supporting us." In a goodwill gesture, Boll counter-donated a miniature Tischtennis table. Only time will tell, however, if the novelty item proves more effective at luring in new members than the time-honored toaster giveaways. "We were happy to support the Borussia campaign," said Göbel. "It sets a noticeable sign of help, solidarity and civic engagement." Along with his club, Timo Boll exemplifies all of the above, always important but crucial in times of crisis. It should come as no surprise, really. After all, he is known for his service.
