It seems like only yesterday that Virginia Sung made history. On May 20, 2019, Sung (pictured, in the red jacket) became the first Chinese-American CEO of USA Table Tennis (USATT). Six months after the momentous occasion, Sung has issued something of a State of the Union address. Her report, published on the USATT website, covers a wide range of accomplishments and ambitions. Although it is quite early in her tenure, Sung can already point to an impressive list of achievements. From a business standpoint, she writes, "We have raised over $600,000 in sponsorships and private donations, doubling our working capital." This will obviously have a beneficial effect on Team USA, providing increased training, travel and other opportunities. One such opportunity comes from a strengthened relationship with the Chinese Table Tennis Association. This has already borne fruit, as the Chinese team spent weeks training with Team USA this August in California. On the heels of this amazing experience, both the USA men's and women's teams made the quarterfinals of the ITTF Team World Cup. Of course, correlation does not equal causation, but It certainly looks good. Another highlight is the USATT's partnership with Omnipong, a company which will now provide software for directors to run all USATT tournaments. Sung also draws attention to the USATT's increased investments in the American Youth Table Tennis Association (AYTTO) and the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA), building a foundation to support student-athletes throughout their academic careers. In addition to being a decorated table tennis player, Sung has also run several large corporations with hundreds of employees. Her previous experience as a CEO in the business world is proving to be a tremendous asset to USATT. Virginia Sung clearly has a habit of making history. If we're lucky, it's one she won't kick.
