To represent one's country at the Olympics is an athlete's highest honor. To be so honored five times is a sure sign of a legendary talent. This is certainly the case for Bose Kaffo, who earned five consecutive Olympic appearances representing her native Nigeria from 1992 to 2008. She also won 15 medals at the All-Africa Games, including seven gold, between 1987 and 2007. As her career as a top player began to wind down, she began to take her knowledge of sport and transition into a leadership role. In 2010, Kaffo coached the African team at the ITTF World Cadet Challenge. She continued to develop her leadership skill set as she worked as a Performance Analyst for Paralympians at Rio in 2016. Now 44, she has earned a Master's Degree in sports science in order to better serve future Nigerian table tennis players. She explained, "I am table tennis. I love my first love and I am what I am because of table tennis... What I am aiming for right now is the ability to give back into the community through what I have seen in the sport abroad.” With Nigeria at the top of African table tennis, rivaled only by Egypt, Kaffo knows all too well that the standard is set incredibly high for the young athletes she intends to mold into to future Olympians. After all, it was she who set the standard.
